The Need for WHOIS Privacy

When your register a domain name your registration details are readable online to anyone who wants to search the public database online. This is known as the WHOIS database and the details stored in the public WHOIS can include your name, address, email and phone number.

Also it has been known for spammers to attempt to mine the WHOIS database for email addresses and personal details, in addition to "domain slammers" trying to steal or transfer your domain name or mislead you into paying a much higher renewal fee.

For Nominet UK Domains

Our WHOIS Privacy or Private Registration Service does not apply to UK Domains (co.uk, org.uk, me.uk). However you can get WHOIS Privacy for free on UK Domain Registrations, however Nominet offer a partial WHOIS opt-out option for private registrants or "Non Trading Individuals." Only your registrant name will still appear in the Nominet WHOIS lookup. Nominet has successfully brought legal actions against "data miners" acquiring large amounts of personal information from the Nominet database, which it jealously guards and regards as its copyright.

Potential Drawbacks of Private Registrations

None that we are aware of. Domain Privacy is perfectly legal and entirely above board. Also unlike some private or "secure" registrations, the domain name is legally registered in your name. Please be aware that if you are operating a business under you domain, may require you to disclose your trading address to comply with various local distance selling regulations and taxation requirements. We reserve the right to suspend any privacy service if the scheme is being used to conceal involvement with illegal, illicit, objectionable or harmful activities. However we highly recommend domain privacy for individual domains registrations.
