Weycrest have relocated their business operation in an eco friendly business centre in East London, next to the River Thames, opposite the "famous" O2 Arena. The buildings are constructed entirely from recycled shipping containers! This tends to play havoc with local wireless networks due to the "Faraday Cage" effect, but this is to some extent appropriate as Michael Faraday conducted his original lighting experiments in conjunction with Trinity House from adjacent Lighthouse on the site (the only lighthouse on the River Thames).

Our entire ethos is geared towards being eco-friendly and green. All non essential electrical equipment is turned off at night and energy saving appliances are used wherever possible throughout the office. Wherever possible paperwork is minimized with most systems including billing available online. We have also ensured the electricity supply for our unit is sourced from renewable, sustainable sources.

Greener Data Centres - Reducing Carbon Footprint

Some time ago we realised our web servers may be contributing to CO2 emissions so decided to take some time helping to reduce the effects of global warming by cutting down on our 'carbon footprint'.

The UK's first Carbon Neutral Datacentre.

This is traditionally the least green aspect of a web hosts operations. Racks of servers, extensive air conditioning to keep things cool. So the first step in making our operations more environmentally friendly was to find a data centre that would voluntarily offset all the CO2 emissions caused by our servers.

World Land Trust

Our data centre has chosen the conservation charity - World Land Trust as the organisation to carry out their offset World Land Trust. Working through local partners World Land Trust regenerates degraded forest in Ecuador, planting native species on land next to standing forest. This not only takes CO2 out of the atmosphere it also extends existing wildlife reserves, thus preserving threatened habitat and biodiversity.

Buenaventura Reserve

Buenaventura is the only conservation area in this habitat and is one of the richest ornithological sites in the country. It is also important for amphibians (a new species has recently been discovered) and orchids. But the flagship species is the endangered El Oro Parakeet Aratinga orcesii . only discovered in 1980 and reduced to 180 birds.

Carbon Offsetting secures land

Our contributions have helped towards the purchasing of the property, which is a 45 hectare extension to the Buenaventura Reserve managed by Fundación Jocotoco in the foothills of the Andes in south-western Ecuador. This area was once covered by low-altitude cloud forest with exceptional biodiversity including many species found nowhere else in the world but the tree cover has now been reduced to scattered patches in pasture.

Carbon Offsetting removes grazing pressure

This property was targeted because it is an important breeding site for parakeets. It also lies at the headwaters of the streams serving the Municipality of Piñas, so conserving the watershed and the water supply for the town. Some 75% of the land parcel has been cleared of forest . The carbon offsetting is achieved by the reforesting of the land through a combination of natural regeneration by removing grazing pressure and by re-planting a range of native species.

Protection against Land Clearance

This is a long term future and will take twenty years before the forest becomes well-grown. Three acres of protected forest have been secured in the remaining 25% of the parcel. The benefits are swift as the real and imminent threat of clearance (and release of Carbon stored in the wood) has been removed. Incorporating the land in the Buenaventura Reserve means these benefits remain permanent.

Planting Process

The planting programme uses seedlings produced in family nurseries while the regenerating forest needs long-term maintenance.

Carbon Offsetting

The whole Rodas project is expected to sequester some 4500 tonnes of CO2 while making a real contribution to wildlife conservation. There are benefits to the local community too such as clean water supply and also local jobs.
